Mercerization is a complicated process, and there are two theories about why cotton fibers swell violently in concentrated lye 1. Hydration theory (1) Caustic soda reacts with natural cellulose (cellulose) to generate alkali cellulose, which has two main types: ① Alcohol compounds: ② Molecular compound (addition compound) : Both products are unstable, hydrolyzed into hydrated cellulose after washing, and then become mercerized cellulose (cellulose Ⅱ) after dehydration and drying. The change of cellulose in the whole process is shown as follows: The physical and chemical properties of cotton fibers are changed with each other by cellulose Ⅰ Ⅱ, showing excellent properties (2) The reason for the severe irreversible swelling of cotton fiber after concentrated NaOH treatment is that the sodium ion is small and it can enter the crystal region of the fiber; At the same time, Na+ is a highly hydrating ion. As many as 66 water molecules surround an Na+ to form a hydration layer. When Na+ enters and combines with fibre, a large amount of water is brought in, causing a violent swelling that is irreversible because of its ability to enter the crystalline zone. (3) This swelling is affected by temperature: (4) Swelling is also affected by NaOH concentration and neutral salt.
